Many people have heard of printed circuit boards but not everyone understands the difference between the different types that you can create. Some products require a multilayer PCB while others require a rigid-flex design.
Here, we are going to look at the various types of PCB and talk a bit about them. Make sure to keep reading if you’d like to find out more about this.
Single And Double Sided PCBs
A single-sided PCB is very simple in design and it often just comes with one layer of substrate or base material. Single-sided PCBs will usually come with a protecting solder mask that can help to keep it intact as it goes on.
Double-sided PCBs are very similar in design to these; however, they will come with one additional side. On this type of board, you’ll find that they come with metal conductive layers and elements on both sides of the PCB. There are usually holes in this type of circuit board.
One of the most common types of PCBs is multilayer PCBs which come with many more layers than simply those on the top and bottom like you’d find in a double-sided design. In a multilayer PCB, you’ll find that the extra layers act as power planes which can help to decrease the levels of electromagnetic interference. These PCBs can be very effective.
Have you ever heard of a rigid flex PCB? These types of PCB are very common as they tend to bring together the features of both a rigid PCB and a flex PCB. The great thing about rigid-flex PCBs is that they can be moved around a lot but are likely to stay intact for longer. Depending on the design requests, you will find that these boards can be more compound than others.
Another type of PCB is a rigid PCB which can come in a different number of sides, layers and changing inflexibilities. This type of PCB will usually be made with a solid, rigid substrate material that can stop the board from twisting. Usually, inflexible PCBs will be present in things like a motherboard on a computer.
In comparison to rigid PCBs, flex PCBs are much more flexible as you might be able to tell from the name. These boards can fit into a variety of different products that require flexibility. The great thing about flex PCBs is that they can come in three different formats that include double-sided, single-sided or multilayer formats.
Now that you know a bit more about the different types of PCB, you can ensure that you are choosing the right one for your next project. Each comes with its own advantages and disadvantages as you can see. It is interesting to know about the types of circuits that appear in all of your household tech products whether you are interested in creating them yourself or not.
